hspace="10"> It was at Alife, the store in the Lower East Side of New York,
that we first came across the often bizarre and disturbing - but utterly
compelling - images of the Canadian based artist MDRL. MDRL’s stuff is hard to
get out of your mind, as he’s able to create characters on the street that seep
into your subconscious. We we’re thrilled when MDRL sent us a huge file of
images, raging from street stuff, to new paintings, to some of his older stuff,
to toys where he’s cross pollinating Sony time Cap. toys with a Milo Kubrick.
Terrific stuff. See for yourself.

MDRL - “The A’s To Our Q’s”
Wooster:
How did you get started in creating art for the street?
MDRL:
I started dropp’n little mini hitters here and there a few years back. After
living in the woods of B.C’s Southern interior, I returned to Toronto and
established my urban camp. I’d make daily sojourns from the camp and leave
marks. I keep it all pretty mellow. It’s a nice subtle way to communicate with
other creatures.
Wooster: How did you come up with the
characters that you use in most of your drawings?
MDRL: i
have daily mania induced celestial freak -outs and I take notes in the form of
scritches ( my term for a quick drawing).
Wooster: What other
street artists do you most admire and why?
MDRL: In Toronto
ASS-EGG , DETH and SINNY cuz they be right crazed.
/>Wooster: What’s your favorite city, neighborhood, or block, to post
and/or to see street art?
MDRL: There are always new moves
going down in Kensington market, Toronto> the mission district in SF is nice>
NY is always overwhelming> I have never been, but from what I have seen,
Copenhagen has the goodness.
Wooster: What inspires you
now?
MDRL: I am really into gibbons. they are awe inspiring
creatures. listen to the audio clips. Oh my!!
Wooster: What
are you currently working on? Can you give us a sneak peak?
/>MDRL: I’m currently working on finishing the last couple of paintings
for a show I am having in Tokyo hosted by 55DSL and Sony creative. i send the
work off this week. Also the HOBOYARD TOY CO. which is SINNY and myself did a
new stuffed creature for the show called CHAMMY. Toronto Director and producer
Jason MacFarlane (aka LOWBEAM) is working with me on new animations, which will
drop at the Tokyo opening. the website is getting a big update soon and the
HOBOYARD TOY CO. site will be dropp’n soon.
